An Interview With Miko Pepito
Miko Pepito and his group has been getting rave reviews on their music for years. They are on the fringes of the music scene who are helping change the course of music in the Philippines.
What do YOU do for a living?
I am a spoken word artist, music producer, and an actor.
What's the state of Original Pilipino Music?
OPM right now is insecure. It wants to progress but it's scared to take the first step.
How can we use music to change the country for the better?
Music is so powerful, it can switch our emotional states in a second. So, I say we need to be responsible artists. As performers, people see us, listen to us. No matter how big or small of an artist you are, you influence others. We must use this power responsibly.
How can we help to popularize Filipino music artists?
1st, we need to encourage EVERYONE. Next, learn to accept and respect them. Lastly, we need good live shows, and to have this we need to excel, in all aspects of a show, from the tech guys, to the production crew, to the performers, EVERYONE. Sad to say, our local live shows aren't really exciting because everyone involved settles for mediocrity.
What's the best thing about Filipino music?
For me, it's how we fuse different cultural influences in our music. Some say that it's bad how we don't have our original sound, but I say it's a good start that we have lots of influences, it's how we use or abuse them that defines each artist.
Who are YOUR favorite singers/bands?
Right now, from the top of my head, Nityalila, Urbandub, Syke, Gloc9, Nimbus9, Jay-Z, and Matisyahu.
Who are YOUR personal heroes? Why?
I have a lot because I believe we all are heroes, we just need to realize our strengths and use them properly. That's why I really admire people who believed in themselves and pushed boundaries, and at the same time stayed grounded in humility. I see hero qualities in everyone.
What are YOU hungry for?
Excellence, Encouragement, Respect, and Truth.
